wind assisted ship propulsion - modern developments in sailing ships
WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON REVISING AND ENHANCING THE wasp course AND THE NEXT EDITION IS CURRENTLY PLANNED FOR FEBRUARY 2026
Wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) is the modern version of sailing commercial freight. This green technology may be central to the energy transition for the maritime sector. At the EZS the knowledge base and experience with sailing vessels can be extended with a technical introduction to modern WASP-systems. The course will begin with a perspective on the history and future of different technologies. After this the focus will go to fluid mechanics and mathematics, followed by a survey of presently available wind-assist devices (Kites, Cousteau Sails, Flettner rotors, segmented wings, soft sails etc). Practical considerations for wind assisted design and operations are given particular emphasis. Upon course completion, students will be familiar with the physical mechanisms behind the new generation of sails. Students will be introduced to significant interaction effects between WASP-systems, the main propulsion engine, course keeping and routing and finally commercial operations. The following components are part of the module: - History and future of WASP - WASP vessel performance - Stability of sailing vessels and WASP vessels - Hydrodynamics and manoeuvring - Aerodynamics - Velocity prediction and weather routing - Shipbuilding WASP The course will conclude with a guest lecture and a panel discussion.
