wind assisted ship propulsion: modern developments in sailing ships

In 2021 we will start with a new module: "Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion, modern developments in sailing ships".
This module will be part of the 'Grote Zeilvaart' (GZV), but will also be a stand-alone course for those interested in learning about new technologies.

Wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP), is the modern version of sailing commercial freight. This green technology may be central to the energy transition for the maritime sector.
This year at EZS, the knowledgebase and experience with sailing vessels is extended with a technical introduction to modern WASP-systems.

The course will begin with a background in necessary fluid mechanics and mathematics, followed by a survey of presently available wind-assist devices (Kites, Cousteau Sails, Flettner rotors, segmented wings, soft sails, etc).
Practical considerations for wind assist design and operation are treated foremost. Upon course completion, students will be familiar with the physical mechanisms behind the new generation of sails.
Students will be introduced to significant interaction effects between WASP-systems, the main propulsion engine, course keeping and routing, and finally commercial operation.

The following components will also be part of the module:
- Performance Prediction
- Routing
- Maritime Awareness
- Ship building and Ships stability of WASP vessels

The module will be organized on 3 Saturdays and 3 Fridays, for a total of appr. 25 hours.
Period: February 19th-March 12th
There is the possibility to follow the course online!

Dates are subject to change!

Costs: please check our School fees

The module will be completed with a  "Certificate of Completion WASP technologies".
